Page 4 - Mid Nineties - Germany, Waxhead Perverts
Working with Ruff, Ruff and Ready Neil had met Phil Conynhgam, a highly accomplished Aussie didgeridoo player who had been making twisted music since the late seventies in various outragous bands in the underground scene in Sydney. Discovering a mutual love of the bizarre and perverted they started collaborating on some music. Phil released an early record on Liberator's Stay Up Forever label and on the flip there was a hard and nasty Controlled Weirdness mix. The record was a big cult hit, especially on the emerging goa trance scene, some people in Germany were paying up to £100 for a copy. This was quite ironic as both Neil and Phil hated this music and loved the harder techno coming out now from places like Detroit as well as having it hardcore rave breakbeats. Neil and Phil formed the infamous Waxhead Perverts for live performance and after one warm up gig at a pub in Deptford they embarked on a tour of Germany. A typical show involved Phil blasting out mad Didj riffs thru effects pedals, Neil playing hard techno beats with an assortment of drum machines, synths, a Casio FZ1 Sampler and an Atari ST, two technics decks where various bizarre records were mixed in and also a selection of kids electronic toys miked up and effected to add to the bizarrre ambience. Meeting various crews in Germany alliances were formed and over the next few years there were plenty of mad parties and events including "The Unearthly Bug" parties held in an old Nazi bunker on the outskirts of Kiel in Northern Germany. On one tour around Germany they brought a radio transmitter with them bringing Pirate Radio to the German airwaves. This was one of the first times since the early seventies that this had been done in Germany as the penalties were severe. Neil also DJ'ed extensively throughout Germany at this time including some mad parties in the old East Germany. One intense gig was in Weimar, the home of German culture where 3000 people turned up for the first ever rave in that area. The venue was surrounded by riot police worried at such a large gathering but all went off peacefully in the end. Neil also did a 3 hour live DJ mastermix and interview session on Saturday night on Kiss FM Berlin.
