Unearthly Records - Dirty Beats and Bass from South London

Page Two - Early Nineties - Pittsburgh and New Orleans USA

At the end of the 1989 Neil moved to New York for six months, living in the heart of Greenwich Village. Over the next few months he started going out to all the hottest house and acid clubs in the city including parties by graffiti artist Keith Haring where Todd Terry was the regular DJ. The sound of house was everywhere that year and compared to London the clubs opened all night with plenty of after hours venues to keep the party going. There was plenty of vinyl to be picked up as well with a lot of original rare hip hop, electro and funk being sold in stores for just a few dollars. Living next door to him in New York was Joel Bevacqua, an accomplished graffiti artist featured in the seminal spraycan tome Spraycan Art by Henry Chalfant and James Prigoff. Neil and Joel got on well and a wild trip to the Mardi Gras in New Orleans cemented there friendship. Neil returned to South London where his sister Stacey had started playing on the popular early rave pirate station Fantasy FM and was running a record stall selling all the latest white labels. Joel visited him in London and they went to some early rave clubs and he played him some of the tunes he was getting from Staceys record stall in Woolwich. Joel returned back to the States and in late 1991 called Neil to suggest they do the first ever rave party in Pittsburgh. He flew Neil over and he brought all the hottest early breakbeat/rave tunes for the party. They were astounded when nearly 1000 people turned up at a fire station on the edge of the city. This was the first time early jungle/drum and bass was played on the East coast of America. For the next six months they continued to hold some celebrated parties in the Pennsylvania area culminating in a spectacular event down South at the Mardi Gras in New Orleans, staged whilst the city whilst on full riot alert after LA had erupted. Neil eventually returned to London in 1992, a week after the legendary Castlemorton outdoor party where upwards of 50000 people partied and caused the usual tabloid frenzy.
